Sea-based economy on the rise thanks to the tourism recovery

Sea-based economy led the recovery in Italy. According to an analysis of the Tagliacarne Centre studies, realised for the Frosinone-Latina Chamber of Commerce, Informare and Unioncamere the produced wealth from the sea-based economy in 2021 marks a +9,3% compared to 2020, bringing to almost 56 billion euros the added value generated by companies in the sector. A positive trend that, according to the estimates of the experts, should be confirmed also this year, bringing the values back to those of the pre-pandemic period. In total, 225,000 businesses are in the Blue economy, 3.7% of total businesses. Just under two thirds of the companies in the sector are tourism-oriented. Lazio is at the top for the number of companies in the maritime System (15.5%). The study highights that in the sea tourism sector, the lodging and catering services are the most numerous: 107,000 enterprises that, with those of the sporting and recreational activities (33,684 enterprises) represent 62.4% of the blue entrepreneurship. The fishing industry is behind (33,601) at 15%, trailed by shipbuilding 13% (28,489).
