European Commission promoted and started the selection of 18 projects aimed at developing rapid diagnosis for COVID-19. Horizon 2020, the Community’s research and innovation programme made available a total of €48million and a half towards the 18 projects. One hundred and forty research teams throughout Europe are working together to tackle the pandemic thanks to the funds on projects, focusing in particular on developing rapid diagnostics, therapies and vaccines, studying the evolution of the epidemic and utilising epidemiology and modelling.
The EU’s commitment in the last few weeks has yielded the mobilization of €90 million in public and private funds for a joint technological initiative on innovative medicines, also offering €80 million in support of CureVac, an innovative company, to accelerate the development and the production of the vaccine for COVID-19. The Commission’s support to research and innovation is part of the overall joint European action to tackle COVID-19 pandemic, which includes as well other projects and research initiatives aimed at fighting against the spread of the disease and to improve the preparation to any other pandemics.
