Istat records a decrease of 5% in the three-year period 2018-2020 compared to the previous one

The health crisis has slowed down the innovation race of Italian companies. This is certified by the data of a study published by Istat, according to which in the three-year period 2018-2020 50.9% of companies carried out innovative activities, a share down by about 5% compared to the period 2016-2018.

Among the causes of the suspension or contraction of innovation was the health emergency that affected 64.8% of companies with innovative activities, in particular the smallest (66.7% against 50.2% of large).

Industry remains the most dynamic sector (58.5% of companies with innovative activities) but also the most affected by the decline in investment in innovation (-7.2 % over the previous three years), especially among small businesses.

In the services sector, innovation slows down (-3.8 %) and affects large companies (-8.0 %).
