EU, safer international trade and investment through the Hague Convention

Contracts of employment, trade, and investment between companies from different countries are now safer in the European Union. It is the result of the EU’s accession to the Hague Convention on Decisions, an important instrument for facilitating multilateral trade and rules-based investment. The Convention lays down conditions for the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters, including consumer contracts and employment contracts, and possible grounds for refusal. The accession of the EU guarantees legal certainty and predictability to European companies operating in different countries, including outside the EU.

The Convention was born in 2019 because different laws and practices around the world made the recognition and enforcement of foreign decisions difficult, if not impossible. This legal uncertainty and the associated costs to businesses have often hindered the flow of international trade and investment, effectively denying justice.
