The Commission has approved the amendment of six operational programmes (Ops) of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) in Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Hungary and Germany under REACT-EU for a total of 2.7 billion euros. In Italy, 1 billion euros is added to the national ERDF-ESF operational programme for metropolitan cities. These resources aim to strengthen the green and digital transition and the resilience of metropolitan cities. 80 million euros are also intended to strengthen the social system in metropolitan cities. In Hungary, the Operational Programme for Economic Development and Innovation (EDIOP) receives additional resources for 881 million euros. This money will be used for an interest-free working capital loan facility to support more than 8000 SMEs and a wage subsidy scheme for workers of companies affected by the COVID-19 block measures. In Spain, the ERDF operational programme for the Canary Islands will receive an additional 402 million euros for protective equipment and health infrastructures, including R&D projects linked to COVID-19. The allocations also support the transition to a green and digital economy, including sustainable tourism. Nearly 7,000 SMEs, mainly in the tourism sector, will receive support to overcome the financial difficulties triggered by the COVID-19 crisis. The region will also devote a significant part of its resources to social and emergency services infrastructure. In the region of Galicia, 305 million euros from REACT-EU complements the ERDF operational programme. This allocation was earmarked to health products and services, the transition to a digital economy, including the digitisation of administration and SMEs. The allocations also support "green" projects such as R&D in forestry, the biological waste chain, urban mobility, intermodal transport, as well as fire prevention and the restructuring of health centres and schools. In Bulgaria, the ERDF OP "Competitiveness and Innovation" receives a sum of further 120 million euros. These resources will be used to support the working capital of SMEs. It is estimated that some 2,600 SMEs should benefit from the support. In Germany, the Brandenburg region will receive an additional 30 million euros for its ERDF operational programme to support the tourism sector and SMEs affected by the coronavirus pandemic and for digitisation measures in cultural institutions and Chambers of Crafts. REACT-EU is part of NextGenerationEU and will provide 50.6 billion euros of additional funding (at current prices) to cohesion policy programmes for the years 2021 and 2022.
