The European Commission has published calls for projects for research and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies under the Horizon Europe programme.

The budget made available to fund the projects is 112.5 million euros. Proposals can be submitted until 18 September 2024.

The available resources will be divided as follows: 65 millions for artificial intelligence; 40 millions for advanced quantum technologies; 7.5 millions for digital transformation.

Specifically, of the 65 million earmarked for artificial intelligence, 50 will be allocated for projects aimed at developing new methods to combine data and extend the great capabilities of AI models. The other 15 million euros will be committed to the development of robust and transparent AI systems. The projects will aim to improve the reliability of AI systems and provide pertinent information on relevant decision-making processes.

For quantum technologies, 25 million euros will be reserved for the creation of a pan-European network of quantum gravimeters (gravity measurement devices). The network will provide high-precision gravity measurements that are important for various fields, such as earth observation and civil engineering. 15 million euros will be further invested in transnational research and development projects in the area of next-generation quantum technologies.

As for the 7.5 million euros earmarked for digital transformation, these will be invested in projects that support European values and put citizens at the heart of the technological transition, increasing the EU's influence in the global standardisation of information and communication technologies.
