The decree of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers has been signed, identifying the priority works and infrastructure for phasing out coal in Sardinia. This is a crucial step in the island's decarbonisation process, in line with the objectives of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).
The decree provides for a series of strategic measures, declared to be of public utility and urgent in nature, for the development of new production capacity from renewable sources and for the installation of energy storage systems. The system of electrical interconnections, both with the mainland and with Sicily, will also be upgraded, together with the strengthening of the transmission network within the island. With regards to gas, a virtual connection will be introduced to guarantee security of supply through the use of regasification terminals, floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) and local networks, while ensuring fair tariffs at national level to protect Sardinian consumers.
"With the signing of the Dpcm on methanisation, after intense inter-institutional negotiations, Sardinia finally has the regulatory instrument necessary for the construction of the network infrastructure for the distribution of methane gas," said Regional Councillor for Industry Emanuele Cani. "The Dpcm will enable us to use methane gas, especially for industrial purposes, in the transition phase towards the right energy transition, ensuring an adequate and stable supply for the industrial system, as well as promoting the use of existing urban basins, in which considerable public resources have been invested. The other substantial element contained in the decree, on which we have persevered with conviction, is the equalisation of gas prices, which will finally put Sardinia and Sardinians on an equal footing with the rest of the country," emphasises Cani.
