A well-organised workplace allows you to identify more easily the sources of dangers and assess possible risks for workers.
Follow these simple steps:
- draw a diagram of your workplace showing the main process phases;
- identify for each phase the machinery, equipment, tools and materials needed. Remember that the more equipment and materials you use the greater the risk. Therefore, be sparing in your choice of equipment, and keep on hand only what is essential and in daily use. Create a dedicated storage area for materials used infrequently;
- arrange the machinery and equipment along an imaginary line following the workflow. The process and the arrangement of machines must be orderly. This will avoid the risk of interference between activities;
- establish how many workers will be involved in each process phase and which competences are required of each;
- describe in an operating manual the main tasks of each position. Each worker must have a clear understanding of his/her role and responsibilities in the company;
- ensure that every day activities are performed following the same pace and procedures; this will make it easier to identify any deviations which may occur and the potential risks they might entail;
- verify by means of periodic inspections that the workplace remains clean and tidy at all times, avoiding unnecessary clutter.
A tidy workplace is a safe workplace!
Find out your company's risk class
Every economic activity has a risk index, which is based on the accident statistics prepared by INAIL (the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority).
Based on this index, your company will belong to one of the following classes:
- low risk;
- medium risk;
- high risk.
According to your risk class, the duration of the following courses will vary:
- course for employers – officer responsible for safety;
- general and specific training course for workers.
