A careful analysis of the market cannot disregard the consideration of 3 different aspects:
1. the macroeconomic context;
2. the population;
3. the productive fabric.
With regards to the macroeconomic context, Sardinia's real Gross Domestic Product in 2022 is 25,042.8 euros per inhabitant. Sardinia's GDP in 2022 is 2.2% higher than the previous year. There are 144,389 active enterprises in 2023, an increase of 1.1% over the previous year.
As far as foreign trade is concerned, the trend is slightly negative. In 2021, trade increased on both the import and export side. Total imports reached a value of 7.6 billion euros (+65% compared to 2022) while the value of exports was 5.6 billion euros, a decrease of 1.4% compared to 2018. Exports from the oil sector reach 4.67 billion euros, down slightly from 4.74 billion euros in 2018, while the rest of the economy generally shows little inclination towards internationalisation. The only three sectors whose exports exceed 100 million euros are basic chemicals (261 million euros in 2019), the basic metals industry and food, the latter slightly increasing compared to the year 2018.
In terms of population, data updated to December 2021, show a resident population of 1,587,413. There has been a slight decrease compared to the years 2019-2020. The demographic structure is characterised by a greater concentration of the male component up to the age of 50, while thereafter the gap increases in favour of the female component.
Finally, when it comes to the productive fabric, in 2019 there were 145,025 active enterprises in Sardinia. Most of the enterprises operate in the trade and professional activities sector, followed by the construction and industrial sectors. Among services, the greatest concentration of enterprises is in the accommodation and catering sector.
However, it is worth remembering one last aspect: Sardinia is a land of innovation.
As widely referred to in the Europe 2020 strategy, Sardinia aims to invest in a model of intelligent specialisation based on high value-added sectors that foster growth and are compatible with sustainable development paths: from tourism to agri-food, from ICT to biotechnology and the green economy.
Regardless of the changing economic situation, the island has a productive, economic, social, and institutional system that is prepared and responsive for economic recovery and the markets to come. This is why investments and active policies are being planned to stimulate the growth of a dynamic and innovative entrepreneurial fabric, capable of creating development and enhancing the workforce in the area.
