The European Commission allocates 120 million euros of funding to support beekeeping for the 2020-2022 period. The European Union is the second largest producer of honey in the world, with 17.5 million beehives divided among 600,000 beekeepers.Italy is the fourth country of the European Union by number of hives with about 1.5 million hives after Poland, Romania and Spain. The importance of beehives is not only economic: bees guarantee the reproduction of plants by pollination, while beekeeping participates in the development of rural areas.
