Social infrastructures


Social infrastructures are divided into health facilities, educational facilities, cultural and recreational facilities.

Health facilities

Medical care is provided through facilities of different types, accredited by the public and private sectors, offering hospitalization, health care and prevention activities. Public or accredited hospitals in Sardinia are divided into:

  • 1 hospital centre
  • 29 hospitals (direct management)
  • 2 hospitals integrated with the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari
  • 1 research institution
  • 12 accredited nursing homes, private premises providing health care services under a general public agreement

The Single Booking Centre is implemented in almost all 8 ASL health centres of Sardinia ( ).

The ASL also serves as a reference point for the medical facilities and care homes affiliated with the National Health Service

It is an active and responsive network of regional cooperation in support of social inclusion and the recovery of underprivileged people.

The SSM service in 2009 had an availability of slightly more than 202,000 beds in Italy, 5,781 of which were in Sardinia, and a further 48,000 beds in accredited facilities, 1,465 of which in Sardinia. The number of beds in public and private accredited facilities compared to the size of the population is 3.5 in Sardinia, if the total number of beds are taken into account (Day Hospital, Day Surgery, ordinary hospitalization, paid health services), while in Italy the value is 3.4.

Cultural and recreational facilities

Sardinian infrastructures for cultural services, on which public cultural investment projects have been based, include Libraries ( which are the most common infrastructures (more than 90% of Sardinian municipalities have one), able to manage innovative services and organize as a thematic network, already active and efficient, not only in the sharing of good practices and tools, but also technologies and connectivity.

This system is enhanced by the widespread availability of cultural facilities, such as cinemas, museums, theatres and cultural spaces dedicated to different types of users. The management is mostly local and seems to be also fairly profitable.
